Discipline and Attitude of Players

18 Oct 2016 by Doug Millen

We had some incidents this evening that left some players injured through stupid acts of very few.

We choose to play light, semi or non contact on Tuesday to prevent such unnecessary injuries prior to a match on Sunday and as an aid to coaching technique.

Rules must be adhered to and respected and players must be disciplined enough within themselves to be able to control their actions so as not to cause intentional injury to others. Tonight saw a suspected broken wrist, a neck injury and a knee injury.

This cannot be condoned in any way and is NOT what I expect from my players. All as a result of them NOT being disciplined enough to respect the “conditioned rules” of tonight’s sessions. The injuries were caused by lack of skill and ability on the perpetrators behalf as they were incapable of beating the player within the rules.

It shows weakness on many levels and is extremely discouraging and demoralising for those injured as a result of the cheap shot and would not be possible in open play !

I had to end the session early and have the lads do “pyramid” runs to stay active. Some chose to walk, whilst others ran until they were physically incapable of continuing, showing great heart and self discipline unlike those who decided that running and being part of the team wasn’t for them and sauntered through, watching their team mates dig deep whilst having a chat amongst themselves.

We already have 2 out with breaks, 2 injured knees and an arm injury. I hope the 3 tonight do not add to the tally.

In the interest of safety and player enjoyment this cannot be permitted to continue and individuals will be asked to leave the sessions in future and their selection for matches will be questioned.

I’m very disappointed by a few tonight which unfortunately spoilt the evening for the vast majority who were their usual exceptional selves . Thank you to those players for your continued commitment and excellent behaviour.

The boys who should know better, know who they are and I know would never behave how they did with their parent present. They all know what they need to do going forward .

I am happy to discuss this further in person should you need to.

We hope the players injured tonight make a speedy recovery and their injuries are not long term. Get well soon .

Moan over !
See you Sunday
Match vs Cranleigh at Bognor, details will follow later in the week.

Many Thanks
